Robbie Ure has won his first call-up to the Scotland national team. The striker's inclusion in new boss Sebastien Pocognoli's squad for the Nations League caps a remarkable journey from leaving Rangers to a £7.5 million summer transfer to Sevilla.
Ure spoke to Sevilla's in-house media ahead of their weekend fixture. "It's a great feeling for me and my family and is something I have been working towards for quite a while," he said.
His path to international recognition was unconventional. After failing to break through at Rangers, he moved to Anderlecht in Belgium three years ago. A subsequent switch to IK Sirius in Sweden two years ago proved key, where he scored prolentially. That form attracted Sevilla, who secured his signature for a substantial fee during the recent transfer window.
Former Scotland defender Alan Hutton praised the 22-year-old's decisive career move. "I think you’ve got to applaud him for taking that step at such a young age to say I’m not going to sit around at Rangers and play second, third, fourth or fifth fiddle," Hutton said.
Pocognoli's first squad selection comes at a critical time. Scotland currently sit third in their World Cup qualifying group with three points from three games, having lost their last two matches against Brazil and Morocco. The team has scored just once while conceding four in those qualifiers.
